Before Valentino was known as an iconic Italian fashion house, Valentino left his small town to study fashion sketching — enrolled in a Berlitz French course in 1949. While following his creative direction, Valentino Garavani won a competition for fashion design which landed him an opportunity to work at the French Couture House of Jean Dessès.

In 1957, Valentino Garavani worked with an illustrator at the French Couture House of Jean Dessès, who decided to start up his own fashion house. After working for two years, Valentino Garavani returned to Rome and decided to open up his own fashion couture house. He prepared the presentation of his very first line of apparel, which oozed beauty and luxury to French fashion enthusiasts.

With the support of his father and his father's friend Giancarlo Giammetti, Italian fashion designer Valentino officially launched the Valentino in 1960 by opening his own fashion house on Via Condotti in Rome, Italy.
