ON THE WIG COAT BY MARTIN MARGIELA

In the 21st Century, your hair is an accessory and an investment. Women and men spend thousands per month to maintain expensive weaves, straightening treatments, color correcting, and take drastic measures to combat hair loss. When Martin Margiela presented one of his final shows as helm of his eponymous brand in 2008, he showed a surreal coat of wig hair with a matching wig for the head perhaps asking "what is real and what is fake?"  Since we prune our bodies of excess body hair, how brilliantly cheeky to wear a coat that embraced a Cro-Magnon dose of fuzz that no...

INSTAGRAM KILLED THE FASHION STAR

Around two weeks ago I tweeted that “Instagram killed the Fashion Star,” passing reference to the 1980 single “Video Killed The Radio Star” by New Wavers’ The Buggles who prophesied that 20th century technology would hamper the arts. Well 21st century technology has hampered fashion and put the industry in a conundrum. The consumer wants the fashion fast. The artist wants the fashion slow to foster creativity. #TBT FOR BALMAIN LOVERS

There seems to always be some kind of hype around Balmain... When this tank came out in 2011, there was a bunch of controversy surrounding the flag depicted with burn holes and tears. It's a Christophe Decarnin design from his last collection at Balmain. Despite the not-so modest price tag of $1,515, the tank quickly sold out and eventually other stores were replicating the design and concept to jump on the bandwagon. CHANEL IS THE FASHION LOVER'S HEDGE FUND

CHANEL IS THE FASHION LOVER'S HEDGE FUND

In 2006, a Chanel  jumbo flap retailed for $1795.00. Only seven years later, that very same bag more than tripled in value with an astonishing price of $5500.00. Apparently, a Chanel purchase has a Madoff-worthy return (albeit without the fraud)!                                                                                                                    ...

Body Art

Body Art

Check out these two dresses by painter, author, illustrator and fashion designer Michaele Vollbracht from the 1980s (when he had his line). I double take when I walk by them upstairs because the paintings printed on silk look so bright and whimsical. Iman, Elizabeth Taylor and Divine are icons who have worn his pieces and made them as collectible as they are today. The geisha dress with kimono sleeves is the more dramatic option while the knee-length one feels chill. Either way, when wearing these dresses, find reasons to move your arms throughout the night to make sure everyone sees the full designs.  ...
